Tupper Nova Program
419 E 24th Ave. Vancouver, BC

Dear Jamie,
Thank you so much for the learning Canadian Barista Institute has provided Tupper Nova students. We've seen over 20 of our youth take Level 1 and 2 courses the past four years, some of whom have gone on to work in cafés, and all of whom left with a greater understanding of how coffee should taste and be prepared.

The teachers, Les and Calvin, are incredibly passionate about the method of making espresso, and that passion is contagious. It's rewarding to see our students engaged in hands-on learning, pulling shots, frothing milk, and pouring latté art.

We look forward to our continued partnership and will continue to send our students to CBI every year.

Sincerely,
Matthew Friesen and Jesse Caswell

Nova respectfully acknowledges the unceded and traditional territories of the Tsleil Waututh, Musqueam and Squamish Coast Salish peoples. May our work deepen our respect for and understanding of the history and first peoples of these territories.

Some quotes from the students:

“ I’m not very much of a coffee person, but if I had coffee that tasted like theirs daily, I’d be fine. After having [Canadian Barista Institute’s] coffee, nothing else seems to compare. It was like putting on glasses for the first time. ” A.S.

“ I found the place really safe and calm. Even when nervous I didn’t feel like I was being judged. I found it was hard to know when to flip the page and write in the (training) booklet, but I loved how in depth things were! ”  M.W.

“ My time at CBA was an incredibly fun and informative experience! I really enjoyed the kind, encouraging environment. And I can confidently say that I learnt how to both make and taste good coffee. ”  M.E.

Barista Course Endorsement Tupper Nova VSB

December 13, 2019

" We’ve taken our students to CBI’s Barista Level 1 course for a couple years now. It’s been great to see them engaged, despite not having much coffee experience.

Les has the best coffee culture anecdotes from his long experience in the industry. He also teaches our youth how to grind, tamp, and draw espresso shots. Through tasting, they figure out what needs adjusting to improve the next shot. And, of course, their favourite: pouring latte art.

It’s awesome, hands-on learning for them. We’ll definitely keep coming back. "

Favourite student quotes from this year:

  • “I never knew coffee could actually taste good.”
  • “Les is a coffee warrior.”
  • “Defund the corrupt coffee police.”
