What we are, and what we are not
The Canadian Barista Institute is an independent, privately owned artisan coffee training organisation. We write our own curriculum, employ our own instructors, and issue our own credentials.
We are not a public college or university, and we are not registered as a career college, private training institution or vocational school under provincial legislation. Our courses are short-format skills training rather than vocational programmes leading to a licence.
We are also not a certifying body. We do not license a syllabus written by anyone else, and we are not accredited by, affiliated with, or acting on behalf of any coffee association, standards organisation or regulator. Where our courses reference industry standards, we say so.
Our credentials
Certificates issued by the Canadian Barista Institute record that you completed a Canadian Barista Institute course. They are ours, and they mean what we say they mean: that you were taught by us, and that you demonstrated the skills the course sets out.
They are not a government licence, a trade certification, an apprenticeship credential, or a qualification issued by or on behalf of any third party. Employers who value them do so because they know our training.
We verify credentials on request. See our Privacy Policy for how that works.
Independence
We do not sell coffee or coffee equipment. Where we partner with an equipment supplier or a host cafe, our classes remain our own and our advice remains independent. Students are always told that other suppliers exist and are free to choose one closer to them.
Where we teach
Courses run at partner training facilities in four cities. These are hosted spaces — please register online or by phone rather than contacting the host business.
- Vancouver — 3711 1st Avenue, Burnaby, British Columbia V5C 3V6
- Calgary — 629 36 Avenue NE, Unit B, Calgary, Alberta T2E 2L8
- Toronto (Davenport) — 116 Geary Avenue #107b, Toronto, Ontario
- Montréal — 162 rue Benjamin-Hudon, Saint-Laurent, Québec H4N 1H8
Satellite campuses run courses in other provinces and territories on request, and we deliver training in cafés and roasteries on request.

Your registration is governed by our Terms of Service — in particular Section 3, which covers use of our course materials — together with our Refund Policy and our Privacy Policy.
Language
This website, our policies and our course materials are available in English and in French. Courses are taught in English unless the listing says en français.
