Choosing the Correct Coffee Roaster

We recently received a great question from one of our students that we wanted to share, as it’s a common consideration for anyone involved in coffee roasting. Here’s the question:

"We currently have a 2014 Ozturkbay 5-kilo natural gas roaster, and I’ve been speaking with a roasting company that’s selling a 2009 Toper TKMS-5 5kg natural gas drum-style roaster. Do you have any thoughts on either of these units?"

Choosing the right equipment is a significant decision for any roasting operation, particularly when considering used or older models.

While the brand and model of the roaster are important, the ability to service the machine locally is a more critical factor. This is especially true for older equipment, where maintenance needs may become more frequent. We recommend starting with two key questions:

  1. Who can repair the roaster if something goes wrong?
  2. Are replacement parts available nearby?

As with any machinery, issues are inevitable, particularly with older, used models. Without access to local support for repairs or replacement parts, even the most reliable roasters can result in costly downtime for your business.

It’s also essential to consider whether a 5kg roaster aligns with your long-term production goals. Is this capacity sufficient for your current and anticipated needs? If you expect your production volume to grow, upgrading to a larger capacity roaster may save on labour costs over time by allowing you to roast more per hour. Weighing these factors against one another can help you make the most informed decision.

Ultimately, the right choice depends on more than just the brand or model. Prioritize serviceability, local support, and how well the equipment fits your business goals.
